The UK Government has launched a new £5bn project to bring faster internet to homes and businesses.
Aimed at providing rural and remote properties with future-proofing broadband speeds, Project Gigabit will allow full fibre providers and other gigabit technologies to connect the hardest to reach areas of the country for a very low cost.
As a result of the pandemic last year, many businesses were forced to send their employees to remote working. Many people in rural areas have found this an issue as their day-to-day online meetings and Zoom calls have been interrupted due to poor broadband reach in their area. The £5billion Gigabit role out project means no more battling over the internet, and more independence to live and work anywhere in the country. This gives business the reassurance they need to keep their employees at home if/when they need.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
"Project Gigabit is the rocket boost that we need to get lightning-fast broadband to all areas of the country. This broadband revolution will fire up people’s businesses and homes, and the vital public services that we all rely on, so we can continue to level up and build back better from this pandemic."
The government pledge to ensure 85% of UK homes to gain access to gigabit broadband by 2025. So far, 40% of all homes and businesses have access to Gigabit speeds.
Vouchers worth up to £3,500 for businesses help to cover the costs of installing gigabit broadband to people’s doorsteps.
